Who Can Lift Williams Into The Midfield??

Who Can Lift Williams Into The Midfield??

Williams, a team with such a grand history, has spent the last couple of years at the back of the grid fighting for the wooden spoon. But now, more than ever it looks as if Williams could raise themselves into the midfield and then become frontrunners once again. Well, which drivers can lift Williams into the fight? Let’s find out!

So, it seems quite obvious that George Russell will leave for Mercedes and at the time of writing he has yet to sign. So, Williams will need a star driver to fill those shoes, although that will be pretty hard as Russell has the shoes of a giant. So, what driver can take the seat? Well, I have a list of a couple of drivers that I think would accept that seat.

  • Pierre Gasly
  • Nico Hulkenburg
  • Stoffel Vandoorne
  • Romain Grosjean
  • Nyck De Vries
  • Valtteri Bottas
  • Alex Albon
  • Jack Aitken

Well, what are the arguments for and against these drivers??

Nico Hulkenburg

Nico just got married and is having a baby sometime this year so I can’t see him being there. A lot of people still think he’s going for that seat which is reasonable to believe

Alex Albon

Alex Albon although being talented is contracted to Red Bull, but if a deal is done between Red Bull and Williams, which is very unlikely, Williams could gain Albon. But this seems ever the more unlikely as Albon seems to be eyeing up a move to IndyCar

Romain Grosjean

Romain although being talented is also old and has commitments to IndyCar already and wouldn’t come back for a back runner. I could’ve also put Kevin Magnussen on this list but he’s basically in the same position

Stoffel Vandoorne & Nyck De Vries

Both Stoffel and Nyck although being Mercedes reserves and being very talented, Stoffel is almost thirty and Nyck is almost 27 and both have commitments to Formula E as well. Nyck, the newly crowned FE champion, seems to be one of the main candidates for that seat.

Jack Aitken

Jack although being young just doesn’t have enough pace IMO to fill those shoes although he is very consistent and he proved himself well in Sakhir. Even after his massive crash at Spa a couple of weeks back, he is still a very valid option.

So, all the drivers I’ve talked about so far are not CURRENTLY in F1, but up next, I have my two options for Williams who are currently racing in F1.

Valtteri Bottas

Valtteri could be making way for George at merc so he could come full circle back to Williams to prove he still has it. He has an outstanding pace like George but fails under pressure so he would be more able down at Williams where there is little to no pressure. But this seems slightly unlikely as he seems to be in talks with Alfa Romeo.

Pierre Gasly

Pierre takes the top spot here as I believe he could escape the dungeons of the red bull driver program and build Williams around himself as they raise themselves into the higher-midfield. Right now, his place in Alphatauri looks ever increasingly at risk with Red bull riding the Yuki hype train even with his mediocre performances. Franz Tost seems to want to keep Gasly and I think they will until 2023

And there’s one thing I haven’t mentioned, Latifi’s seat. His seat actually seems at risk but I think he can resign until 2023, especially after his points in Hungary, and then he will have to find a place elsewhere.

So, in my alternate universe, after 2023 Williams, now a high midfield team, will sign Gasly to lead Nyck de Vries who will sign in 2022, forming a strong lineup.
