Fernando Alonso goes fastest in FP2 and Lewis Hamilton is disqualified

FP2 is surprising to say the least but all the drama was off-track. Lewis getting called to stewards yesterday for illegal use of DRS and Max too for touching Lewis’ Mercedes rear-wing.

The Mercedes duo didn’t come out of pits till 20 mins in. They focused on using softs for keeping fresher sets of mediums and hards for Sprint Race and Race on Sunday. Fernando Alonso surprisingly went fastest of all in FP2. Max Verstappen was 8 tenths of a second behind the two-time world champion.

And the complete drama happened after FP2. FIA fined Max Verstappen 50,000 for touching rear wing of Mercedes at Parc Ferme after yesterday’s qualifying session.

Lewis Hamilton is disqualified from Qualifying after DRS infringement.

Stewards explained, “When DRS is activated, which raises the upper element of the wing to a flatter position, the gap must be between 10mm and 85mm. The maximum gap is measured, in accordance with TD/011-19, by pushing an 85mm gauge against the gap with a maximum load of 10N (ten newtons.) If the gauge goes through then the car has failed the test.

“In this case, the gauge would not pass through at the inner section of the wing, but did at the outer section of the wing. This test was repeated four times with two different gauges, once being done in the presence of the Stewards and representatives of the Competitor.”

Now Lewis has to start the sprint race from back which is not good for him and Mercedes in the championship battle. And also don’t forget that Lewis already has a 5-place grid penalty for the race on Sunday.
