It’s finally been announced, Albon will be a Williams driver for 2022 and with it closes the triangle between Williams, Mercedes, and Alfa Romeo.
The silly season is here, let’s talk about what just happened the last few days. It all started on Monday, September 6th when Valterri Bottas announced he would be signing with Alfa Romeo for 2022 which sent the dominos falling.
The next day Mercedes announced George Russell would be the one to partner Lewis Hamilton for 2022.
Now we come to today where Williams announced that they were not only keeping Latifi for 2022, but they were also signing Red Bull test and reserve driver Alex Albon.
Albon has been rumoured around the seat for some time now and finally has the chance to prove to the world that he deserves to be in Formula 1. The pairing of him and Latifi is not something new, they were teammates at DAMS in Formula 2 and got along so don’t expect sparks to fly between them.
Looking at the both of them, even though Latifi has that extra experience within the Williams team and with the Williams car, I do think Albon will beat Latifi next year, and with the new aero regulations coming everyone on the grid will have to adapt to essentially a brand new car, Albon has already proven he’s a decently quick learner seeing how fast he adapted to a GT3 car in DTM.
Alex has since commented “It’s also been great to see all the progress Williams have been making as a team this year and I look forward to helping them continue that journey in 2022. My focus now returns to my Test & Reserve Driver role at Red Bull and helping the team fight for this year’s world championship.”
Christian Horner Team Principal of Red Bull also commented saying “Alex has been a hugely valuable asset in his role as our test and reserve driver this year, helping bring performance from the simulator to the car each weekend, but for his career, it was important not to spend another season out of an F1 race seat.
With his place on the grid next year secured, we are delighted to see him realize this opportunity and we will be following his progress closely.”
To be honest I’m so excited to see how Alex will do next year but how this bright star will shine only time will tell, let’s look forward to 2022!
